Data Breach Alerts

What is the Dark Web?

The dark web is the World Wide Web content that exists on darknets: overlay networks that use the Internet but require specific software, configurations, or authorization to access. Through the dark web, private computer networks can communicate and conduct business anonymously without divulging identifying information, such as a user’s location. The dark web forms a small part of the deep web, the part of the Web not indexed by web search engines, although sometimes the term deep web is mistakenly used to refer specifically to the dark web.

It is like a marketplace or search engine where people buy illicit information like weapons, stolen credit cards details, illegal drugs, etc. Hackers use the dark web to sell the information they steal from users and companies.

Data breaches are on the rise

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2021 Data Breach Report, data breaches jumped 68 percent last year to the highest total ever, the report says.

The numbers reflect a year of high-profile cyberattacks that targeted everything from the country’s largest oil pipelines to companies entrusted with the personal information of American users.
